In my book – ancient is beautiful. Okay, not always, but I like to see some “new
blood” breathen into ancient, be it something like mithology or ancient traditional customs and iconography. Just like Ivory Skies does with their new line. For those of you who didn’t have a chance to be introduced to this London based independent clothing company through my earlier post about them – Ivory Skies is based around ancient iconography, with each design telling it’s story. “The new line has stayed true to our original concept of ancient art blended with modern indie”, says Carlo Salanitri, one of the fine London lads behind Ivory Skies. “This time however”, adds he, “we brought to the table a less refined look than our first collection”. Carlo tells no lies, because the images used are a much more raw, but still represent authentic ancient art. Here’s the example.
This one’s called “Angel Horns” and it belongs to “The Purple Haze” line. “The Purple Haze” is inspired by rock music, with the name coming from one of the
rock classics and one of the Jimi Hendrixs’ most popular songs. Carlo explains: “While I was designing them, I was listening to the song “Purple Haze”, so I thought it would be a great idea to incorporate different shades of purple in the new designs”. In my opinion – this was a good idea, because designs look pretty much great even close or from the distance, which is hard to accomplish for every T-shirt designer. Here’s another exapmle, called “Snake Dragon”.
Now, as I said before – each of these designs is telling it’s story, being it fictional or non-fictional. I find it very cool that Ivory Skies actually has a
Facebook group dedicated to the stories behind their shirts. Check it out here.
Ivory Skies brought also something else new with it’s new line – shirts are differently cut, with the neckline being really thin. Now, I know it might be a problem with some people, because not everybody will love that, even though they might love the designs alone. However, this proves Ivory Skies are profiling themselves as the label not for everyone, but for those who seek artistic approach to casual / everyday clothing. All their shirts are available through their online shop.
